Mike Sherwood - Entrepreneurs Circle Certified Coach

What Is an Entrepreneurs Circle Certified Coach?

Learn how certified coach Mike Sherwood combines Entrepreneurs Circle systems with 25+ years of experience to support Hastings business owners.

Why I Added a Structured Coaching Framework to More Than 25 Years of Business Experience

An Entrepreneurs Circle Certified Coach works one-to-one with business owners using a structured approach to marketing, sales, planning and accountability.

The purpose is not to provide vague encouragement or fill your diary with more tasks. It is to understand where your business is now, identify what is limiting progress and help you take focused action.

I became an Entrepreneurs Circle Certified Coach in 2025. By that point, I had already spent more than 25 years starting, running and developing businesses. I chose to become certified because I wanted to combine that experience with a clearer framework, stronger coaching tools and a more consistent process for supporting clients.

For business owners in Hastings and the wider 1066 area, this means receiving practical advice from someone who has experienced the realities of running companies, supported by an established coaching, marketing and sales system.

Why I Became a Business Coach

My interest in business coaching comes partly from the mistakes and setbacks I have experienced myself.

My first company was a recruitment business. It did not succeed.

I worked hard, but effort alone was not enough. I did not yet have the knowledge, systems or commercial discipline needed to build a strong and sustainable company.

That experience was difficult, but it forced me to reassess how businesses work and what owners need to understand beyond delivering their core service.

I founded FreshOnline in 2014 and began studying business, marketing and sales much more seriously. I wanted to understand how to attract customers consistently, price services properly, build reliable systems and create a company that did not depend entirely on the owner.

FreshOnline began as a one-person operation. I managed the sales, client relationships, project delivery and administration myself.

Since then, I have built a team, launched additional agencies and specialist brands, supported businesses across several sectors and stepped away from much of the daily delivery.

That growth required more than marketing. It involved sales, pricing, recruitment, leadership, cash flow, delegation, systems and many difficult decisions.

Those experiences now shape the way I work with coaching clients.

Why I Chose Entrepreneurs Circle

I had been a member of Entrepreneurs Circle for several years before deciding to become a certified coach.

Its training, systems and support had already helped me improve my own businesses. I valued its practical approach and its focus on creating a consistent process for attracting and converting customers.

As I began supporting more business owners, I also recognised a limitation in simply sharing advice.

A business owner might leave a meeting with several useful ideas but fail to implement them once daily pressures returned. Another might focus on marketing before fixing problems with pricing, follow-up or profitability.

I wanted a clearer method for diagnosing the real issue, agreeing priorities and keeping implementation moving after the conversation ended.

Becoming certified gave me that structure.

It did not replace my experience. It gave me a stronger way to organise and apply it.

What Did the Certification Involve?

Becoming an Entrepreneurs Circle Certified Coach involved formal training and an examination.

My development has continued since qualifying. I take part in regular calls with other certified coaches and with Entrepreneurs Circle founder and CEO Nigel Botterill. I also attend ongoing coach training days at the Entrepreneurs Circle headquarters in Birmingham.

These sessions allow coaches to review methods, discuss real client situations, and continue improving the way the system is applied.

As a certified coach, I also have access to Entrepreneurs Circle materials, scorecards, templates, and practical resources to support clients.

This continuing training matters because effective coaching requires more than completing an initial course. It requires regular review, learning and challenge.

What Is the Entrepreneurs Marketing & Sales System?

The Entrepreneurs Marketing & Sales System is a five-part framework to help small businesses consistently attract and retain customers. Its official stages are Find Your Gap, Foundation Blocks, Fixing Your Marketing, Know the Score and Stabilise, Optimise, Maximise.

I apply these stages to each client’s needs and position.

1. Find Your Gap

We begin by establishing where your business is now, where you want it to be, and what is standing between the two.

Many owners start coaching with a long list of concerns. They may need more enquiries, stronger sales, improved profit, clearer systems and more time away from daily delivery.

Trying to address everything at once normally creates more confusion.

Finding the gap helps us identify the most important issues and decide what deserves attention first.

This may involve reviewing your goals, sales figures, marketing activity, conversion rates, profitability, team structure, or time use.

2. Foundation Blocks

More marketing will not solve every business problem.

Before investing heavily in promotion, you may need a clearer offer, stronger pricing, better follow-up, improved financial information or more reliable internal systems.

This stage focuses on putting the right foundations in place.

The aim is to ensure that increasing demand strengthens the company rather than creates additional pressure or exposes existing weaknesses.

3. Fix Your Marketing

Once the foundations are stronger, we can focus on more consistently attracting and converting the right customers.

This could involve your positioning, website, SEO, referrals, networking, content, email follow-up, paid advertising or sales process.

The answer is rarely to attempt every possible marketing activity.

We select the methods most suited to your audience, resources and goals. We then create a practical plan and apply it consistently enough to assess the results.

4. Know the Score

Good decisions require reliable information.

Depending on your company, we may track figures such as:

  • Qualified enquiries
  • Sales conversion rates
  • Average customer value
  • Marketing costs
  • Gross profit
  • Recurring income
  • Customer retention

A simple scorecard makes it easier to see what is working, where progress has slowed and what requires attention next.

It also reduces the risk of making decisions based entirely on assumptions or how busy the business feels.

5. Stabilise, Optimise and Maximise

Improving a business is not a one-off exercise.

First, we stabilise the activities and systems that need to work reliably. We then review and optimise them based on the results. Once they are working well, we can consider how to maximise their impact.

This helps prevent a common problem: moving on to the next idea before the previous one has been implemented properly.

The aim is consistent improvement rather than constant change.

How Does the Framework Help My Clients?

The Entrepreneurs Circle system provides structure, but the coaching remains personal to you and your business.

A service company may need to generate more qualified enquiries. A professional practice may need clearer pricing and financial targets. A clinic may need better systems, stronger sales follow-up or a plan to reduce the owner’s involvement in daily delivery.

There is no identical plan applied to every client.

The framework helps us work through the issues in a sensible order. My own experience helps me assess what is practical within your available time, budget, team and current pressures.

That combination is important.

A framework without judgement can become too rigid. Experience without a framework can result in useful conversations that lack direction or follow-through.

My coaching brings the two together.

What Happens During One-to-One Coaching?

Ongoing one-to-one clients normally meet with me every two weeks for a private session lasting between 45 and 60 minutes.

Most sessions take place online, making them easier to fit around your company’s operations.

We review what has happened since the previous meeting, what the numbers are showing and which actions have been completed. We then work through any current challenges and agree the next priorities.

Clients receive:

  • A written summary and clear action plan
  • Relevant business scorecards and templates
  • Accountability and support between sessions
  • Practical marketing and sales guidance
  • Introductions to trusted specialists when appropriate

You should leave each session knowing what needs to happen next, why it matters and how progress will be assessed.

My role is not to create activity for its own sake. It is to help you make stronger decisions and complete the actions most likely to improve your company.

Is Entrepreneurs Circle Coaching Only About Marketing?

Marketing and sales are important parts of the system, but my coaching is broader than promotion alone.

A company may need more customers, but it may also need better pricing, stronger profit margins, improved systems or clearer staff responsibilities.

There is little benefit in generating more enquiries when the sales process is weak, the service is underpriced or the company lacks the capacity to deliver the work properly.

We may therefore work across several areas, including:

  • Strategy and priorities
  • Marketing and lead generation
  • Sales and conversion
  • Pricing and profitability
  • Systems and accountability
  • Team structure and delegation
  • The owner’s role within the company

The purpose is to build a stronger company rather than simply increase marketing activity.

Who Is My Coaching Best Suited To?

I work mainly with owners of service-based businesses, including medical and aesthetic clinics, professional services companies, agencies, consultancies and training organisations.

The coaching is particularly relevant when:

  • Enquiries or sales feel inconsistent
  • Marketing lacks structure
  • Profitability is unclear or disappointing
  • Too much depends on the owner
  • Important decisions keep being delayed
  • The company is busy but not progressing

The business does not need to be large. You do need to be willing to discuss your position honestly, review the relevant numbers and act on the priorities agreed.

Who Might Not Be Suited to Coaching?

Business coaching is not the correct answer for everyone.

It may not suit you when you want someone else to complete all the work, are unwilling to share relevant information or expect guaranteed financial results.

You may also need a different specialist if your main concern involves legal, accounting, tax, HR or health matters.

I will be honest when coaching is not the most suitable service. Where possible, I can also introduce you to trusted people within my professional network.

The client remains responsible for final decisions and implementation.

Business Coaching in Hastings

I am based at the Innovation Centre in St Leonards-on-Sea and support business owners across Hastings, Bexhill, Eastbourne, Rye and the wider 1066 area.

Most one-to-one sessions are held online, although in-person meetings can also be arranged where appropriate.

Being based locally still has value.

I understand the importance of reputation, referrals, local networking and Google visibility for companies serving customers across Hastings and East Sussex.

I also understand the pressures that come with owning a smaller service-based company, where the owner may be responsible for sales, delivery, team decisions and financial performance at the same time.

Why Both Experience and Certification Matter

I do not believe that a certificate alone makes someone a good business coach.

Practical experience matters. A coach should understand the realities of finding customers, managing cash flow, employing people, making mistakes and dealing with uncertainty.

At the same time, experience without a clear process can lead to coaching that becomes a series of interesting conversations without enough implementation.

My approach combines both.

I bring more than 25 years of experience, including a company that failed, a business built from the ground up and the challenges of growing teams, launching new brands and stepping back from daily delivery.

My Entrepreneurs Circle certification provides an established framework, ongoing development and practical resources for applying that experience more effectively.
